Girls Footy

2020 Girls Footy is Back! – Training Starts 17 February.

Welcome to all current and potential new players, parents and families to Season 2020.

Our Girls Football programme has gone from strength to strength with 2019 seeing us grow to 3 teams and over 70 registered players. What a great effort by all our teams – some great new friendships, lots of improvement and a little success on and off the field along the way. It would be fantastic to continue this trend in 2020.

Our first training for Girls of all ages is at Canterbury Sports Ground (Chatham Road) at 5.45p.m, Monday 17th of February. No Football Boots – Runners Only! Training at the Tennis Club end of the oval. Following training an information session will be held at the ground from 7.00 – 7.30. Parents and players are encouraged to attend as our intent is to provide an outline of the 2020 season and seek feedback on what is working well and areas we can improve upon. Please come along armed with questions and ideas

A schedule for remainder of Feb will follow. We intend to alternate Monday and Wednesday nights as many girls have existing commitments on one or the other evening.

All players and parents are encouraged to forward our communications onto friends and girls potentially interested in playing football in 2020 and invite as many interested parents and girls along on Monday. Girls trying footy for the first time are particularly welcome. We can only grow if we spread the word.

In 2020 we are hopeful of fielding 4 or more teams for girls aged from 8 up to the age of 16 (born 2004). We are extremely keen to field an all-girls team in the YJFL under 8/9/10 modified competition (New Team) and at least 3 teams from Under 11/12 up to Under 16’s ensuring our Under 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 girls this year can all continue to enjoy their football at Canterbury.

To register simply go to and follow the prompts. Early registrations greatly assist us in finalising teams hence your support in registering is requested. Come along, invite all your friends and have fun – Girls Footy is the fastest growing female sport in Australia.

So Why Canterbury:

  • A Club committed to the premise that sport is about fun, participation, building confidence, and community engagement.
  • An extensive focus on skills acquisition and development for all girls regardless of experience with specialist skills coaching sessions organised throughout the season.
  • Access to support and assistance throughout the season from Harriet Cordner (current AFLW player for Melbourne) in a skills coaching/mentoring capacity.
  • Developing children not only on the field – but off the field through team participation and exposure to leaders in our community. In 2019 we were fortunate enough to have Susan Alberti – AC, Dr Amanda Green and Tyrone Bean speak to our club about Diversity and Inclusion.
